Strategic Workshop on Geoengineering Research

25 and 26 November, 2009

Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany

The meeting was sponsored by the European Science Foundation (ESF) with additional funding coming from the European Commission’s FP7 project IMPLICC (http://implicc.zmaw.de) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.

Goals of the workshop were to
(1) clarify the status and perceived viability of various geo-engineering proposals thereby identifying and sharpening key questions,
(2) explore ways of framing geoengineering research so that it advances our general understanding of the climate system, and
(3) help nurture European science on this important topic.
